And you're blind?" Uh-huh, " Iggy said, trying to sound bored. Were you born that way?" No." How did you become blind, uh, Jeff, is it?" Yeah, Jeff. Well, I looked directly at the sun, you know, the way they always tell you not to. If only I had listened.

About This Quote

In this quote, “Iggy” is referring to a person named Jeff. Jeff is a young worker who was working on a construction site that was being built on the edge of a cliff. He had been working for a few days before the incident. The weather was perfect and he had been standing on a small, raised platform at the top of the cliff, overseeing the work being done by his crew. A contractor named Jeff was standing on the same platform.

They looked at each other and started talking about how they had both been born blind. The contractor was not blind, but he had been born with only one eye and so wore an eyepatch over it. He had been blinded in a barrel-house accident at a very young age and so never saw anything beyond that eye. Jeff wore the eyepatch because of this.

The two men talked about how they were both blind and how they had both entered the construction business through their eyes being damaged in some way. After some time, time started to get away from them and they realized that sunset was fast approaching. The sky over the construction site was clear and there was no sign of rain or clouds in sight.

They both stopped talking, but stayed where they were in order to finish their work for the day. However, when they looked back toward the place where their work ended, Jeff noticed that Iggy’s face had gone blank when he looked out over at where they were standing when he began to talk about blindness with him. He watched as Iggy stepped backward off of the platform and fell backward down toward the edge of the cliff itself. At that moment, Iggy realized that he had lost his balance and let go of everything that he was holding onto in order to catch himself out of surprise for falling backward instead of letting go of his own grip to try to stop himself from falling forward into nothingness below him. It took him forever to realize what he missed in order to make it back up onto solid ground again, but when he did it happened way too late for him to stop himself from falling all the way down to his death below him...
